The five points of the star represent the five tenets of Taekwon-Do, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable spirit.
In human colour psychology, red is associated with brave (India), pure(India),happiness (China), good luck (China), heat, energy, and blood, and emotions that “stir the blood”, including anger, passion, love, pain, and sacrifice.
The star represents ambition – a famous Irish person once said – “we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars!” – Oscar Wilde.
At Red Star we train in the dynamic striking arts of Taekwon-Do and Kickboxing. The club was founded in 2004 in Cabra West and operated out of a school hall. Fast forward to present day and the club now boasts an impressive line up of world and european gold medallists in the sport of Taekwon-Do and current National Kickboxing champions. Our competitors are respected on the national and international circuit proving that our approach to training athletes is second to none. In recent years we have had gold medal success at the ITF World Championships in South Korea, the World Taekwon-Do Festival, the ITF European championships in Croatia and Sardinia in 2008 and 2009 as well as having current national kickboxing champions training at our club.
We pride ourselves on being a close knit bunch of sports enthusiasts, but first and foremost we look out for each other as friends. Whatever you are looking for from your martial arts training, you will find it at Red Star. New members are always very welcome.
In 2009 and after months of hard work, sweat and toil, we eventually opened our full time training centre. Having the full time centre meant that we could dedicate a lot more to our members and increase the number of classes that we ran. Out of this full time centre Red Star will continue to produce top level athletes.

How we train
At Red Star we have something for everybody. Not everyone is into competing. That’s a given. So with that in mind we have classes to suit everyone’s taste. For those who wish to compete at kickboxing and Taekwon-Do we have classes for them, for those who just want to get fit and tone up, we have classes for them as well.
For those that wish to learn Taekwon-Do the Martial Art, we have that covered too. We have classes to suit every person, at every age group from 4 years right up to 64 years and beyond. Each class is different, as different aspects are practiced, our kickboxing classes will be aerobically challenging, while learning the tools of the trade.
Our Taekwon-Do classes focus on the sport applications of this famous Korean art. We also run cardio kickboxing classes for all those who want to tone up, lose weight and feel great. It’s hard really to quantify all that we are and have become in a few paragraphs on the internet. We enjoy valuable local support from parents and community bodies. Your best bet is to come down and give the training a go, you’ll be made feel welcome and relaxed!
Red Star is a proud member of the Irish Martial Arts Commission (IMAC) which stands as the National Governing Body for Martial Arts with the Irish Sports Council. Our membership with IMAC is through our Kickboxing affiliation, the All Styles Kickboxing Association of Ireland (AKAI). Being members of the Irish Martial Arts Commission means our coaches are accredited and certified through the Coaching Ireland coaching courses. It also means our coaches are Garda vetted and trained in child protection procedures as well as first aid.
At Red Star we take Bruce Lee’s concept of being a good fighter in all the different ranges. This means being able to fight within striking distance, close proximity and being able to fight on the ground. Our all round self defence concepts are learned from one of the worlds leading self defence experts, Lee Morrison.
Red Star instructor, Mr Jon Mackey is an instructor under Lee Morrison and teaches his Urban Combatives reality based system. We also host various training seminars in other styles, we have recently held training seminars in Brazilian JiuJitsu, Pressure Points fighting, boxing and Mixed Martial Arts.
